8th Lustrum Region & dinner and lecture
The 8th Lustrum of KIVI Region Noord-Holland was celebrated on 15 February 2017 with 2 activities. A company visit to Damen Ship Repair Amsterdam (ref separate report), followed by drinks, buffet and lecture on the nearby 106-year-old, beautifully restored and maintained radersalon boat Captain Anna.
In his keynote address, Gerald Schotman, President of KIVI, addressed the challenges for an engineering society like the Royal Institute of Engineers. We live in a rapidly changing world with broad social and political issues, in which KIVI has no special role to play. But it does in the field of engineering, where there is also much to be done! As a professional association of engineers, KIVI contributes substantially to the sustainable society of the 21st century and uses three spearheads:
- strengthening engineers in their professional practice,
- commitment to the quality of technical-scientific education and research and
- promoting interaction between the professional field, knowledge institutions and society.
One of the major challenges is to make/keep KIVI attractive to a wide range of engineers, ranging from students/near graduates to near or already retired members - generations who have very different needs and modes of communication.
With 58 guests, we can look back on a successful anniversary celebration!
Description
In February 2017, it will be 40 years since the first KIVI Region North Holland meeting was organised by Ir W.G. van Olm in one of the rooms of restaurant 'Bosrand' (now 'De Veranda') in Amsterdam.
This will be celebrated on 15 February. First with a company visit to the Damen Shiprepair yard in Amsterdam (North-West) in the afternoon. Followed by drinks & dinner on a nearby 116-year-old technical tour de force, the beautifully restored and maintained paddle steamer 'Kapitein Anna'.
A separate invitation for the afternoon programme will be sent out around 25 January.
