Ir. W. D. (Wouter) van der Wiel, of Iv-Group engineering firm, gave us an overview of the technical condition of the existing locks and the preliminary design, with location, of the New Sea Lock. The existing Noordersluis, built in 1929, is technically in need of replacement/restoration. Studies show that the lock and technical installations need to be replaced by 2029 at the latest. The concrete is/is corroding and the running gear of the doors is worn out.A new sea lock, long 500 metres, wide 65-70 metres and a sill at 18 metres -NAP will allow for the renovation or closure of the Noordersluis and also meet the increasing number and size of ships. (container and passenger ships) The talk clearly highlighted the risks of the various concepts, such as: location, type of doors, number of spare doors, collisions etc. etc. A lively discussion ensued during the talk, partly due to a number of experts in the room. After more than two hours, the very engaging and lively meeting ended. Due to space constraints, the number of participants was limited to 46.

The green light has been given for the construction of the New Sea Lock at IJmuiden.
The design and obtaining of permits is in full swing. W. D. (Wouter) van der Wiel, Senior Project Leader at Iv-infra, is a member of the Management Team IJmuiden Sea Lock.
