North/South line in Amsterdam
This is the third time our department has organised an excursion to the North-South Line. The extensive project and its progress make it possible to visit an interesting part each time. After the stagnation in 2008 due to the unexpected subsidence of the houses on Vijzelstraat, major progress has been made over the past two-plus years. The section to be drilled is well over halfway and has proceeded without any calamity. Since a few days, the main entrance to Central Station has been open again. The other stations are being hard at work. The Rokin station was visited. We were impressed by the depth, length and width of the station. The complexity of working in the middle of the city at a depth of 26 metres impressed us. Thanks to the agility of the North-South exhibition staff, the number of participants could be increased from 25 to 35. The more than 20 members on the waiting list have been informed that another excursion will be planned next year if possible.
