The Engineer in Healthcare
At the Kennemer Gasthuis in Haarlem, Bart Titulaer (clinical physicist) gave a talk entitled: Care for Technology. After a sandwich lunch in the hospital's restaurant, we were received in the tasteful hearing room next to the restaurant. In the talk, the speaker addressed the following topics, among others:-The impact of technology and the developments of technology on a hospital's daily care activities are huge. On more and more wards, patients are monitored, the variety of forms of therapy are increasing. Ten years ago, the entire chest had to be opened. Now laparoscopic techniques, which with HD image quality directs the surgeon (remotely), suffice in many cases. The
surgical robot further increases that distance and adds normal geometry and maximum instrument control. -Just because something can be done does not mean something is useful. The added value is often exaggerated, the cost implications often underestimated. Think of the discussion on the added value of breast cancer screening.-The risks in case of technical failures, e.g. power failure or maintenance, are high and are often not anticipated.-The advantages and disadvantages of market forces in healthcare, including cost increases.-The constantly rising healthcare costs. Of the annual 70 billion, 20 billion goes to the hospitals, which are increasingly able to convert fatal diseases into chronic diseases, with all the cost implications this entails.
The captivating, lively, humorous narration and the many questions from the audience made the time fly and the speaker stayed on the floor for two and a half hours at a stretch. There were 32 participants.
Description
KIVI NIRIA Region North-Holland invites you to the first meeting of the 2012-2013 season.
This lecture fits in with KIVI NIRIA's annual theme: DE INGENIEUR IN DE ZORG.
Clinical physicist Bart Titulaer, who works at the Kennemer Gasthuis hospital in Haarlem, will give the lecture ZORG VOOR TECHNIEK (CARE FOR TECHNOLOGY). The content of the lecture will include:
On more and more hospital wards, patients are monitored.
Where less than 10 years ago the entire chest had to be opened, now laparoscopic techniques, which with HD image quality guide the surgeon
Just because something can be done, does not mean it is useful. The added value is often exaggerated, the cost implications often underestimated.
Macroeconomically, healthcare remains a concern. We are increasingly able to convert formerly fatal diseases into chronic ones. The improvement in technology and science therefore leads to a longer outcome with all the associated costs. Aktueel is the call for political choices to keep healthcare affordable.
The increase in technology also creates new expectations. We assume it is safe, the staff can handle it, we can interpret the data etc
