Description

Machinefabriek Emmen, CTC group, Stenden Hogeschool and Dierenpark Emmen (DPE next), join 'innovative hands'.
The DPE next project in Emmen has a first. The new zoo will be equipped with the world's first movable bio-composite bridge in mid-2015. The movable bridge has a size of 4 x 5 metres. These biological materials are strong, light, easy to install and low-maintenance. The application of this movable bio-composite bridge is a joint initiative of Dierenpark Emmen, Volker Wessels, Municipality of Emmen and the Province of Drenthe. With this innovative application, the parties are jointly working on a more sustainable and innovative new Dierenpark Emmen (DPE next)

From Glass to Flax
Biocomposites can already be used to build a stronger and lighter structure than ordinary composites based on glass fibres. The natural fibre raw materials for these biocomposites are obtained from, flax, jute, coconut and hemp." Besides strength, freedom of shape and versatile applicability, there are other advantages that biocomposites offer. Natural fibres require less energy to produce. Fewer chemicals are also needed to make them adhere to the resin. Because these biofibres are often lighter than glass fibres, this also leads to savings and CO2 reduction, especially in movable structures.

Sustainable cooperation
Machinefabriek Emmen, CTC group and Stenden University work closely together in search of sustainable and innovative solutions. The movable bio-composite bridge at Savannah is the first project in the Netherlands to have a movable bio-composite bridge. Due to the application of bio - composite and the fact that the bridge at the new Emmen Zoo is movable, it is unique for the Netherlands and for the entire world.
