Leeuwarden University of Applied Sciences
Description
NHL Hogeschool is an educational institution for higher education in the Netherlands. The university of applied sciences has more than 10,000 students and over 1,000 staff members in Leeuwarden (main location), Groningen, Zwolle, West-Terschelling and Enschede. The university is maintained by the Leeuwarden Northern University of Applied Sciences Foundation. On 1 September 2009, the name of the college was changed from Noordelijke Hogeschool Leeuwarden to NHL Hogeschool. The location Leeuwarden is so from the name, this was done because of the different locations in the Netherlands, among other reasons. It is the intention that in the future the old meaning of the abbreviation NHL will disappear, as has happened for example with brands such as HEMA and UPC.
New building
On 4 January 2010, the staff and students of the NHL started working in a new building. This location is on the site of the former Bouhof, a former location of the NHL. In addition, the NHL had locations in Leeuwarden on the Tesselschadestraat, among others.
The new location is next to Stenden University of Applied Sciences and is located on a central square. The new building was officially opened by Princess Máxima on 27 May 2010. The new building was designed by Hertzberger Architectuurstudio Hertzberger. The central hall of the building houses an avenue of shops including a copy shop, bookstore, GP and employment agency.
The cost of the new building was estimated at 55 million euros in 2003. The cost soon turned out to be higher, partly due to increased prices of building materials and because contracted construction companies wanted more money. The cost of connecting the new and old building also turned out to be higher than expected. The actual price of the building ended up being 90 million euros.
The new building inspired the design of the new logo. Hugo van den Bos (Strategy Director, Koeweiden Postma): "If you all move to such a beautiful new building, which is so striking because of its lighting effect, interplay of lines and combination of old and new, you would be crazy not to exploit this fact in the corporate identity. The new building of NHL University of Applied Sciences is a landmark in Leeuwarden and every time people see the house style or logo, they refer to it. That is the power of the new house style."
