Description

Proton therapy and construction of treatment centre at UMCG

Radiotherapy with proton beams is a relatively new treatment method for tumours that will also become available to patients in the Netherlands in the course of 2017. The UMCG in Groningen is one of the first hospitals in the Netherlands to start offering treatment with protons in addition to traditional photon irradiation. Construction of the proton therapy centre at UMCG began in 2015. The first patients will be treated at the end of 2017.

Proton therapy is a form of radiotherapy in which the dose of radiation can be administered more precisely, resulting in less radiation entering normal tissues. This reduces the likelihood of side effects from radiation.

The KIVI Biomedical Engineering (BMT) and North Region departments are organising a joint activity covering both the physical background of proton therapy and its medical applications and the construction of the treatment centre. The programme consists of two parts, one in spring and one in autumn 2016.

The first activity took place on Monday 6 June this year and consisted of a visit to the KVI-CART, the Centre for Advanced Radiation Technology of the Nuclear Physics Accelerator Institute of the RUG.
This second activity consists of a visit to the proton therapy treatment centre under construction. The special building requirements and building engineering aspects will be discussed in more detail. The programme will consist of a presentation on proton therapy, followed by a tour of the building.

If you are unable to attend, you are urgently requested to cancel on the website and report this by telephone to Jan Schipper 06-42887726, so that someone else can take your place.
As this is an activity at a project that is under construction, there is a possibility that it may be cancelled shortly beforehand. You will then be notified by e-mail as soon as possible.
Please therefore check your e-mail shortly in advance!

If you come by car, park in the parking garage UMCG Noord (paid parking). This can be reached via Vrydemalaan (the only access for car traffic to car park Noord). Take the UMCG Noord entrance. Reception is at the Radiotherapy Department, Fonteinstraat 18, where you can report to the desk.
