The world of corrosion
LEEUWARDEN - The first of the series of knowledge exchange meetings organised by Region North at NHL University of Applied Sciences, the lecture on corrosion took place on Thursday 19 February.
Around 18:00, the first participants reported for the meeting.

Under the pleasure of a cup of soup and a sandwich, the participants get to know each other informally. At precisely 19:00, Institute of Technology director Mr Drijfhout welcomed us and corrosion expert Mr J.F.J. Verhage, known as Jaap, began his talk. Enthusiastic and animated, he talks about the origins of corrosion, electrochemical corrosion, the types of corrosion and corrosion protection and control. It goes from anode to cathode and from formula to different forms of corrosion. Everything is covered. And what emerges? Corrosion is actually iron hydroxide and not iron oxide, as so often thought. This is because when steel comes into contact with water, an electrochemical process begins. The iron disintegrates into iron(2)ions and electrons. These electrons combine with the water and oxygen to form hydroxide ions. These react with the iron(2)ions. This creates hydrated iron(3)oxide: or rust on steel. During this one-and-a-half-hour lecture, we do not get bored for a minute. With pointer in hand, we are taken into the world of corrosion and a world literally opens up to us.
After the lecture, Mr Verhage takes the participants to the Materials Science Lab. Afterwards, while enjoying a snack and a drink, we continue talking about the biggest disappointment until almost closing time: rust is iron hydroxide!

Description
Region North organises knowledge exchange meetings at NHL University of Applied Sciences. These meetings are exclusively for KIVI members, students and teachers from the Institute of Engineering at NHL Hogeschool. All attendees are given time and opportunity to make new contacts and expand the network. In addition, the exchange of knowledge plays an important role.
In this meeting, your corrosion issue has our attention!
In the first meeting of this series, Mr. Ir. Jaap F.J. Verhage, lecturer in materials science at the NHL University of Applied Sciences, will take you into the world of corrosion.
During the lecture, your corrosion issue will be the focus of attention. Using practical examples, terms such as galvanic corrosion, general corrosion and pitting and crevice corrosion may just pass by. Mr Jaap F.J. Verhage will tell you about these terms, which are so characteristic of the field and which you have always wanted to know more about
Would you like Mr Verhage to handle your corrosion issue? Or do you have other questions about corrosion to which you would like answers? Then describe your question(s) briefly and concisely and send them to m.vancronenberg@online.nl by 9 February 2015.
Host is the NHL University of Applied Sciences Department of Engineering
Naturally, there will be room for discussion and questions afterwards. Soup and bread will also be provided.
The programme will be as follows:
18:00 - 19:00
Reception with soup and bread
19:00 - 20:15
Treatment of the corrosion issues in which practice and theory seamlessly merge
20:15 - 21:00
Opportunity to ask questions and visit the material science lab.
21:15
Closure and opportunity for networking
