N31 traffic artery
Description
With the new N31, Rijkswaterstaat, Province of Fryslân and Municipality of Harlingen are working on liveability, safety and accessibility.
The N31 is the direct connection between Amsterdam and Leeuwarden, via the Afsluitdijk and Harlingen. This road is being reconstructed to improve Fryslân's accessibility. The new road will also be safer and improve traffic flow in and around Harlingen. The new N31 will be a motorway with twice two lanes and will be largely sunken.
2 city districts will become 1!
In the current situation, the N31 creates a divided Harlingen. With the sunken location of the new road between the Van Harinxmakanaal and Kimswerderweg, this 'visual division' disappears: you no longer look at the road, but over it. Harlingen becomes one whole again. In the new situation, the road crosses the Van Harinxmakanaal in the form of an aqueduct, making waiting times at the Koningsbrug for car traffic a thing of the past. The railway line will be 'crossed at grade', with the track crossing the N31. The road is expected to be commissioned by the end of 2017.
Various preparatory works were carried out in the spring and summer of 2015. These included felling trees on the route and carrying out various pumping tests and soundings. In November 2015, work outside really started.
In the summer of 2016, the temporary bridges over Kimswerderweg and Grensweg were put into use. This way, there is room for the demolition of large parts of the old road to then start building the new N31 here. The railway viaduct has also been pushed into its final position.
On 31 March 2017, the aqueduct in the Van Harinxmakanaal was floated in.
If everything goes according to plan, the road will be opened to traffic at the end of 2017. However, this does not mean that the work is over. The area around the N31 is still being laid out and various minor adjustments will follow.
