Description

The purpose of this visit (COMBINED WITH A MIDDLE DAY VISIT TO MEYERWERFT IN PAPENBURG) is to get acquainted with the work of the Wasser - & Schiffartambt in Emden (part of the Bundesministerium für Verkehr, Bau und Stadtentwicklung).
This visit in the morning will be combined with a visit to the Meyerwerft in Papenburg in the afternoon.
Both visits form one thematic whole, so to speak.

A presentation will be given in Emden on the mission, work and ambitions of the Wasser - & Schiffahrtambt. For a number of participants smaller than 20 persons, this presentation will take place in combination with a tour of the Ems Traffic Control Centre
WSV has the following main tasks:
1. maintaining national waterways in Germany and ensuring that they meet the requirements set in terms of safety and use.
2. excluding risks for people and the environment arising from navigation and other waterway use
3. responsible for maintenance, modernisation and construction in respect of national waterways in Germany, including official approval procedures
4. maintenance and operation of 450 bridges, 290 weirs, 4 ship lifts, 15 canal bridges and 2 dams.
5. maintenance and operation of waterway markings, including 1,600 fixed light beacons in inlets and approx. 4,000 buoys. In addition, there are approx. 10000 other beacons for the purpose of inland navigation.
6. maintenance and operation of "wet" traffic centres for sea lanes and inland waterways. These are manned daily 24 hours a day by trained personnel for supervision, monitoring, control, information supply, advice, including the function of maritime police with intervention and coordination tasks in case of calamities and environmental pollution.
7. Maintenance and operation of globally deployable and technically advanced oil and chemical emergency response vessels and fire fighting vessels, which mainly serve within German territory, but can also be deployed internationally o.b.v. bilateral agreements.

In Emden, the focus of our visit is:
Guidance of cruise ships from Papenburg (Meyerwerft) to the open sea, in combination with the reduction of the deepening of the Ems.
Here, a combination with a visit to the Ems Traffic Control Centre is possible with fewer than 20 participants.
