'High Voltage Direct Current' Technology
Description
'High Voltage Direct Current', the new electricity supply.
The lecture will first briefly discuss what SmartGrids are and what role they will play in the future sustainable electric energy supply and the role of HVDC in it.
Then the HVDC technology for transporting (and steering) electrical energy is explained in detail.
After an overview of the current status and future developments, some examples of HVDC projects such as the NorNed cable, the XS link, the TenneT socket at sea but also plans such as the European supergrid, NordSea grid and Desertec are given
Speaker(s)
The speaker, Peter Vaessen, is working in the field of HVDC and among other things involved in the realisation of the largest HVDC project in the world, the Xiangjiaba - Shanghai (XS) link, 6400MW, 2000km with ± 800kV and the TenneT socket at sea project.
