MRI Assisted Therapy
Description
This lecture will discuss two revolutionary systems used to deliver therapy simultaneously with imaging. The systems used for therapy are a high-field MRI-guided linear accelerator and an MRI-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound system.
The integrated MRI system with linear accelerator is unique in the world and was developed in close cooperation between Elekta, Philips and UMC-Utrecht. With the linear accelerator, the tumour can be treated by radiation, while the MRI system can precisely localise the tumour. With the combination, the radiation can be controlled very precisely.
Focused ultrasound is used to destroy tumours in the body by heating. With MRI images, ultrasound energy is directed into the tumour where tumour cells are destroyed by heating without damaging surrounding tissue
19:00 lecture on MR-Linac
19:30 lecture on MR guided focused ultrasound
20:00 guided tours (in groups) of the systems
Bus transport between TU/e Eindhoven Auditorium and UMC-Utrecht is available for those interested.
Speaker(s)
Bas Raaymakers (1972) studied physics in Utrecht and did his PhD work at UMC Utrecht. In the final year of his PhD trajectory (2000), together with Jan Lagendijk, the concept MRI accelerator was conceived and then further developed. The current MRI accelerator is the result of 15 years of work in close cooperation of UMC Utrecht with Elekta and Philips.
Clemens Bos (1973) studied experimental physics in Groningen and worked on MR-guided endovascular interventions during his PhD in Utrecht. Post-doc in Bordeaux was followed by more than 7 years in industry at Philips Medical Systems in Best on diagnostic applications of MRI. In 2011, he returned to UMC Utrecht to continue working on the medical application of focused ultrasound under MR-guided, one of the treatment modalities in the Centre for Image-Guided Oncological Interventions at UMC Utrecht
