Description

A day excursion to the historic city of Haarlem where we have two interesting visits on the programme. As all locations are within walking distance of the NS railway station, we keep open the option for everyone to come to Haarlem by train or by own transport.

The morning programme is a visit to Teylers Museum, where we start with a guided tour of about an hour, after which we are free to look around until lunch, which is served in the museum café. The museum breathes the authentic atmosphere of the 18th and 19th centuries - the Age of Enlightenment. Since 1784, the public has been welcome here to come and look at objects of art and science. From machines generating electricity to million-year-old fossils, historical books and coins. Art lovers go to Teylers for its fine collection of Dutch masters and the world-famous prints and drawings by Rembrandt and Michelangelo. In the modern wing, Teylers Museum organises exhibitions and presentations in which parts of the extensive permanent collection play a leading role, complemented by special loans.

For the afternoon programme, we move to NedTrain's Refurbishment and Overhaul site, where, after welcoming us, we start with a presentation and then get a guided tour of the company. The workshop in Haarlem is still very important for train travelling Netherlands. With its area of 14 hectares and around 800 employees, it is NedTrain's largest workshop. The main activities in R&O Haarlem are overhaul, conversion and modernisation of trains, overhaul of turntables and wheel sets, repair of collision and fire damage and production of parts. Then the formal programme ends.

An option is to return to Teylers Museum, take a stroll around Haarlem and/or return home.

The cost of participation includes entrance fees, guide fees and lunch at Tylers Museum.
