Description

Our annual day excursion for members but certainly also for their partners and guests. Always an interesting topic in an enjoyable day out for everyone. This time, a piece of Nijmegen history along the harbour quay, introduction to a project of artisanal coffee roasting and beer brewing in a beautiful historic building and, as the main theme, the widening of the river Waal. A guided tour with a view of the works among beautiful views of the river.

Why this unique project? The Waal makes a sharp bend near Nijmegen and also narrows there like a bottle neck. Extreme flooding in 1993 and 1995 made it clear that the river cannot handle high water. To prevent flooding in the future, the Waal is given more room. This will be created by moving the dyke some 350m inland and digging a large side channel in the new area outside the dyke. These measures will lower the water level by about 35cm in extreme conditions. The construction of the side channel will create an elongated island in the Waal. The new north bank will be home to the Waalsprong, a new urban district with 12,000 homes, connected to the island and thus to the historic city centre by newly constructed bridges. So soon the Waal will no longer flow past, but through Nijmegen.

At 09.00 we will depart by bus from Best station to Koffiehuis & Branderij Coffyn, located in the old centre of Nijmegen, where we will be welcomed with coffee and cake. There, a demonstration of coffee roasting will be given and the coffee can be sampled. In parallel, a guided tour of Nijmegen's historic centre will be given. At Coffyn we will also get our lunch.
After lunch we will go to the information centre "Nijmegen omarmt de Waal" on the Waalkade, where we will get explanations about the project. Then we make our way to the other side of the river Waal for a guided tour of the project.
In the afternoon, we return to the historic centre to the Brewers café de Hemel. Here the different steps of brewing beer are demonstrated and also the processing of the beer into mustard, vinegar and also whisky, liqueur and gin. Growing thirsty and hungry from that, we are offered a Brouwers meal there during which some of the locally brewed beers and fruit juices can be sampled.
