DELTA is the first energy company to start building a new power plant of this size after the liberalisation (2004) of the electricity market in the Netherlands and is now commissioning it after two years of construction.
DELTA's modern, gas-fired power plant is unique because of significantly lower CO2 emissions and high efficiency.
The power plant consists of a combined cycle with two separate 435 MW units. This uses the latest gas turbine technology, resulting in CO2 emissions more than 25% lower than at existing power plants in the Netherlands. This corresponds to over half a million tonnes less CO2 emissions per year.
In addition, the power plant is unique in its kind because of its exceptionally high efficiency (58%). The power plant delivers about 870 MW. This is comparable to the consumption of more than two million households. The Borssele nuclear power plant, for example, delivers a capacity of 435 MW.
Natural gas is used as fuel for electricity generation. This gas is burned in the gas turbine, after which the waste gases are passed through a boiler. In the boiler, the heat from the flue gases is used to produce steam. This steam is then passed through a steam turbine. The gas and steam turbine together drive a single generator that generates electricity.
