Wärtsilä is a world leader in the production and service of marine engines and marine propulsion systems and supplier of gas and oil-fired turnkey power plants.

It operates in 70 countries. In the Benelux, Wärtsilä has an extensive network of knowledge centres, sales offices, production facilities and specialised maintenance workshops.
More than 1,700 people work in the Netherlands across the following nine locations: Drunen (ship propellers, formerly Lips), Zwolle, Harlingen, IJmuiden, Hardinxveld-Giesendam, Schiedam, Amersfoort, Waalwijk and Kruiningen.

The Kruiningen location deals with reconditioning of parts of low and middle speed engines. We should think of exhaust valves, connecting rods, piston heads, cylinder covers, bearings. Reconditioning here includes: after external cleaning of the parts, examination/inspection, reconditioning, drawing up repair proposals, clean-turning, welding and milling/boring. In short, bringing parts back to specification.

Besides reconditioning of Wärtsilä's own engine parts, reconditioning of parts from other engine manufacturers is also carried out. Repairs and machining operations are also carried out on equipment parts of plants of the regional industry.
For the Wärtsilä branch in Drunen, machining operations are carried out on blades of adjustable marine propellers.

Anyone walking through the workshops cannot help but be impressed by the machining operations on many large (CNC-controlled) turning, milling and boring machines (where do you still find that?). But the large number of welding stations (robotic and manual) is also impressive.

A very interesting visit for anyone interested in mechanical engineering and large machining machines.
