Lecture Pilotage Region Scheldemonden
Description
On 24 April, we offer a fascinating lecture on the "taxi drivers of the Scheldemonden" : the pilotage service. This maritime organisation is committed to the safe and smooth handling of shipping traffic 24 hours a day.
Nederlands Loodswezen
Approximately 425 registered pilots handle 90,000 ship movements a year. Today's pilot is an independent professional. He acts as an advisor to the captain. On board a ship, with the consent of the captain, he is in charge of navigation. Besides handling shipping traffic, he also contributes significantly to protecting the environment and infrastructure. The register pilot has a great responsibility not only towards the ship, but also towards those on board and society.
LOODSWEZEN REGION SCHELDEMONDEN
The Dutch register pilots operate in all ports along the Westerschelde and Oosterschelde. Special arrangements apply to the Flemish ports of Antwerp and Ghent. Dutch pilots are responsible for 27.5% of all shipping to Antwerp and Ghent, while Flemish pilots pilot the remaining 72.5%. The Scheldt region is unique in more ways than one. The very winding river is considered one of the most difficult to navigate in the world. In addition, the partnership with the Flemish Pilotage is particularly unique.
