Description

Around 1900, as many as 1,000 large and small sailing fishing vessels operated in the Zeeland Delta. Wooden ships with a flat bottom, also suitable for shallow water. A very characteristic ship type was the Hoogaars. They are unique wooden ships, recognisable by their high backsides. Over the years, very few of them have survived.
Stichting Behoud Hoogaars is committed to preserving the authentic Hoogaars and Hengst as sailing monuments of fishing in the (Zeeland and Flemish) delta region.

This activity begins with a visit to the Historic Shipyard C.A Meerman in Arnemuiden where the Hoogaars are restored and maintained. The visit is guided and time is taken to explain the (historical) working methods and to ask questions.

This is followed by boarding two Hoogaars ships for a sailing trip on Lake Veere. A tasty dinner will be served during the sailing trip. Once on board such an old lady, time stands still. The atmosphere of yesteryear becomes tangible. The salty atmosphere mixed with the smell of linseed oil and tar
