An internship in Switzerland: working on advanced microscopy equipment
From the flat Netherlands to mountainous Switzerland: from February to May, as a Masterâs student in Mechanical Engineering at TU/e, I undertook a 14-week work placement at EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland. There, I worked on advanced microscopy instrumentation.
The assignment
The placement was at the âLaboratory for Bio- and Nano-Instrumentationâ. This lab focuses on instrumentation, microfabrication and biology at the nanoscale. The lab also designs and builds its own instrumentation. One of the major projects currently underway there is the development of the AFSEM. This is an advanced measurement system that integrates various microscopy techniques. One advantage of this is that it enables researchers to more easily combine the strengths of these techniques in the final results. Integrating these techniques into a single system ensures that measurements can be carried out more quickly and reduces the risk of contamination. During my placement, my task was to design an optical microscope for integration into the AFSEM. In doing so, I had to take into account the limited space available and the need for compatibility with the system.
Learned a Lot
During my work placement, I was involved in many stages of the design process: from drawing up specifications to conceptual, optical and mechanical design. At the end of my placement, I delivered a CAD design that can support the further development of the system.
Through this major project, I learnt a great deal about the design process. As I had to get to grips with new CAD software and optical simulation software within a short space of time, I quickly learnt how to work with these tools. I gained experience in creating a manufacturable design. This placement has further confirmed my interest in precision engineering, mechanical design and opto-mechatronics!
It was also an interesting experience to be involved in the lab itself. I was the only intern; the rest were PhD students and researchers. This experience has given me a better idea of what it might be like to do a PhD and work in academia.
Stunning Nature
Apart from the interesting work placement, Switzerland itself was fantastic! The university was within walking distance of the lake, and you could be in the Alps in no time. As I arrived in February, I was able to experience both the winter and summer seasons. I went skiing several times, did some via ferratas and went on lots of hikes. There were also plenty of activities organised for exchange students. I made loads of friends here!
An unforgettable experience
