About Cornelis Lely
Cornelis Lely (Amsterdam, 23 September 1854 - The Hague, 22 January 1929) was a Dutch engineer, hydraulic engineer, minister, governor and politician. The Zuiderzee Works were largely implemented according to his plans. Lely designed a first draft of his plan to seal off the Zuiderzee in 1891, upon which this inland sea was eventually permanently closed by the Afsluitdijk in 1932, creating the present-day IJsselmeer.
