Sugar can be used to produce plastics like PEF which can be used in bottles. But that is not the only thing. From beet pulp a material that reduces the speed of the increase and decrease of the blood sugar level after eating for instance chocolate, can be obtained. Cosun is already working together with AkzoNobel for the application of cellulose from the beet pulp.
If the production of sugar is not limited anymore by quota, the production can increase and provide a feedstock for the chemical industry. North west Europe has the largest and most efficient plants for sugar beets and combined with the highest yield per hectare, North west Europe is an ideal location for the production of sugar beets.
