How do you measure the impact of future deep-sea mining on vulnerable ecosystems? During this presentation, Julian Manrho, a final-year student at Delft University of Technology, will take you through his final-year research into sediment plumes in the deep sea and demonstrate how acoustic and optical sensors can contribute to the real-time monitoring of this vulnerable environment. He will discuss the challenges of measuring suspended sediment particles, the initial results of his research and the importance of these techniques for responsible deep-sea research.

Thanks to a grant from the KIVI Study and Travel Fund, Julian was able to spend a month conducting research at the Kristineberg Research Station in Sweden, where he carried out laboratory experiments and collaborated with international researchers.

The presentation will last approximately 20 minutes and will be followed by a 10-minute Q&A session. Julian’s thesis defence will take place immediately afterwards.
