Huize De Dieu a gentlemen's society

New York has one, London has one, Tokyo has one and recently Alkmaar has one too: a gentlemen's club. A nice place for men 'who matter' where they can network, enjoy a cigar and sip a glass of whisky or wine. Mark Snijders is initiator and chairman of Herensociëteit De Dieu, named after the building of the same name on Langestraat 114. The 100 members of the club have embraced the monumental Huize Egmont - as the property's middle name goes - and are making it partially accessible to the public again.
The property was sold last year by insurance company 't Hooge Huys to the Kennemer Haeve Group, which in turn was looking for a new owner for the property. It was feared that a shop operator would damage the fragile interior, but it did not come to that. Mark Snijders, together with the other board members, sought founders for his gentlemen's club in order to take over the property.Maintaining huize De Dieu is the most important of these. That has succeeded. Other than that, as a group of guys, we just want to do nice things. A nice place where we can get together for a cup of coffee, a glass of wine, whisky or to smoke a cigar. We will therefore make an old-fashioned smoking room.
