Tunnel safety and the second Coentunnel
Description
Over a hundred thousand motorists use the Coentunnel every day. And that is too many for this section of motorway, where the route changes from three lanes to a two-lane road. Junction Coenplein, or 'the bottle neck', has therefore belonged in the Dutch traffic jam top 10 for years. A problem that, if nothing is done about it, will cause more and more stagnation on the entire Amsterdam ring road and its access roads. The solution? Create capacity. An increase in the number of lanes, including the construction of a Second Coentunnel with alternating lanes between the A8 and A10 motorways, should restore the safe flow of traffic.
On 1 July 2012, the new Tunnel Act will come into force, providing clarity on safety requirements for tunnels with a legal standard. In addition, there will be a regulation prescribing standard packages of installations and systems for each type of tunnel.
What implications does the Tunnel Act have on the Second Coen Tunnel project? Furthermore, the progress of the Second Coen Tunnel project will be discussed.
