Short report on first KIVI Kring Caribbean activity in Aruba
The first activity and also the start of the KIVI Circle Caribbean took place in Aruba on 30 November 2021 at the Aruba Experience building, Oranjestad. The aim of this first activity was to inform the engineers and engineering students present about the Royal Institute of Engineers (KIVI) and what KIVI can do for the professionalism of the engineer in general and, in particular, about the possibilities of keeping the profession up-to-date through KIVI. This first activity was announced via a press communication and a press conference to invite the engineers and engineering students present in Aruba to attend.
Over 40 people, mostly engineers and engineering students, responded. It started with an opportunity for networking while enjoying drinks and snacks. Due to the small scale, many attendees were familiar with each other and formed groups, most of which were positive about the initiative to start a KIVI Circle Caribbean. Consequently, there were comments that KIVI is not just a club but a serious club to be reckoned with. Several engineers present said they had been members of KIVI in their student days.
This was followed by a presentation by ing. Marvin Weverink, a member of the board. He told those present about who KIVI is and what it mainly does and can do for engineers. Followed by another board member Ir. Rubiëla Lampe-Chiquito, who talked about what membership entailed and the costs for this, but also about the use of the website and what KIVI has to offer in terms of professionalising the engineer and keeping the discipline up to date.
In between, the presentation was enlivened with recorded speeches by the account coordinator of the KIVI Circle Caribbean ms Elfride Dijkstra and the director of the KIVI Bureau in The Hague Mr drs. ing. Miguel Delcour. Ms Dijkstra offered those present to approach her mainly about membership questions but also to make contacts with other organisations in the Netherlands through her, i.e. such a network coordinator between Aruba and the Netherlands. Mr Delcour showed those present the beautiful building with all kinds of meeting rooms of the KIVI Bureau in The Hague, the editing room of the KIVI magazine that is published monthly with 64 pages full of technical news. He ended by inviting all Aruban engineers, should they be in the Netherlands, to visit the KIVI Bureau located at Prinsessegracht number 23 in The Hague.
Finally, ir Leopoldo Henriquez, a KIVI member since 1986 (35 years), appealed to the engineers and engineering students present to become members. Using examples, he explained what the added value of KIVI has meant and still means to him as an engineer all these years. He also stressed the importance of taking part in the activities mainly to share knowledge and expertise, and to discuss socially relevant problems that require an engineering approach, but also mainly to network with the chance of new business activities.
After the presentation opportunity was provided for further networking.
