Extracting minerals at sea
Description
Increasing prosperity and growth of the world's population mean that raw materials are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. As this process progresses, a new form of mining is emerging - underwater mining. The reserves available in the oceans are vast and diverse. A new world is opening up underwater that is fascinating in terms of natural phenomena but also offers unprecedented challenges for engineers. Where offshore oil and gas extraction is already mature, Deep Sea Mining may be the 'new frontier' where frontrunners have a chance to gain a strategic lead. Dutch and Belgian dredgers, shipyards, engineering firms and knowledge institutions hold good cards to take advantage of this. The lecture will cover, among other things, the main categories of deposits in deep water and discuss the various challenges, environmental aspects and opportunities for business.
We will start at 18:00 with drinks, 19:00 dinner and at 20:00 - 21:45 the lecture.
