Description

Running trains on a track seems simple, but involves extensive planning. Disruptions occur daily in railway networks that make this planning unworkable. On average, 2 to 3 major disruptions a day, which make it necessary to adjust the planning and minimise inconvenience to passengers. Rail operators (such as NS) and rail managers (such as ProRail) try to avoid disruptions, unfortunately this is not always possible. It is important to think about how to adjust schedules if unexpected disruptions do occur. New timetables and new staff and equipment schedules must be made to minimise the disruption to passengers.
In the event of a major disruption with a number of tracks out of service for several hours, the adjustment consists not only of making a new timetable, but also of making a new equipment plan and a new staffing plan. Because certain trains are cancelled or delayed, gaps appear in the rolling stock and staff schedules. Because of these gaps, equipment or staff may have a job that ends at one location and the next job starts at another location. This is not feasible and these shifts have to be adjusted.
it is very complex to include in one model all constraints for a new timetable and new equipment and staff rosters. The computational time of such a model will be large and unrealistic for practical purposes. Therefore, the focus of the mathematical models is on adjusting only one schedule at a time. Before starting the adjustment of equipment and staff, the timetable must be clear. Once this is in place, a set of equipment and staff tasks is described, for which both equipment and staff must be found.
