Current challenges in mobility and logistics call for a different approach, especially in view of the enormous task in terms of safety, increasing growth in logistics and climate objectives. Application of IoT techniques and data sharing are key in this respect. All this explicitly requires a different way of organising. IenW/RWS have been active in this for a number of years. During our EU presidency, for instance, we organised the EU Truck Platooning Challenge. But also more recently, in direct cooperation with partners, we operationalised the Experience Week Connected Transport. This generated a lot of enthusiasm within both the sector and road authorities for the application of connected transport. It can be concluded that logistics and traffic management have a lot to offer each other, but hardly work together (yet). Connected transport - where data sharing on departure time, weight, route and destination is a must - connects these two blood groups and makes the synergy transparent, in both commercial and social terms. That synergy translates into both benefits in terms of safety, flow (reliability/efficiency) and sustainability (significant fuel savings).
