Climate: complex or complicated?
In this presentation, Govert Geldof (Civil Engineering 1980-1986) distinguishes between complexity and intricacy. Complexity is about developing, complexity is about wrapping. That takes some getting used to, but if you apply the distinction consistently, it provides a way of looking at tough social issues in a refreshing way. Often beautiful ideas get stranded in a web of all kinds of complicated rules and procedures. On 12 November, we will look at the climate debate through these glasses. The issue is serious. We are no longer talking about sea level rise but accelerated sea level rise. Biodiversity is hollowing out. What you see is that the government tends to reduce the complexity of the issue, expecting it to be easier to manage as a result. However, this makes it all more complicated and we lose sight of a sustainable future.
