The DESDEMONA simulator
Description
TNO in Soesterberg is traditionally a Human Factors institute. Aerospace physiologist Dr Eric Groen has been researching human functioning in moving environments, such as ships, aircraft, and nowadays simulators, for 20 years. In his presentation, he will discuss the physiology of motion sickness and spatial disorientation. In addition, he will discuss TNO's DESDEMONA research and training facility. This simulator is equipped with unique motion capabilities, including a centrifuge for generating G-forces.
One of the projects to be discussed concerns research into the so-called Space Adaptation Syndrome, which astronauts face during the first days of their stay in orbit. TNO has recently started research into the effects of commercial sub-orbital space flights. Although these flights are of relatively short duration, significant changes in G-forces take place. This can affect passengers and crew.
Another project discussed is the recently completed EU project "Simulation of UPset Recovery in Aviation" (SUPRA). This project has developed new simulator technologies that allow commercial pilots to safely experience upset situations in their own cockpit environment. The term "upset" refers to unintended deviations from the normal flight path, such as an extreme nose or wing position (unusual attitude) or a stall. If such a situation is not corrected in time, it can lead to Loss-of-Control: for years the leading cause of major aviation accidents. Due to aircraft model and simulator movement limitations, current flight simulators are unsuitable for upset recovery training. Within SUPRA, a new aerodynamic aircraft model has been developed that can now realistically simulate aircraft behaviour outside the normal "flight envelope". This presentation will discuss the test results
