In recent years, the obvious long-term availability of several essential metal minerals has become increasingly uncertain. Although large reserves of metal minerals are known, it is the uneven geological distribution and the speed of extraction that undermine a guaranteed flow of essential raw materials.
In the Netherlands, the Material Scarcity Platform was established on the initiative of TNO. In it, several organisations (including Shell, Philips and industry associations such as VNO-NCW, FME, VNMI) and representatives of relevant ministries participate.
In his talk, Ton Bastein will highlight the background to materials scarcity, some international policy measures and technical and political scenarios to understand scarcity and mitigate its effects
