Nitrogen policy in the Netherlands based on special 'settlement methodology'
What is the Netherlands' nitrogen policy all about?
In fact, nitrogen policy is as follows: nature quality (conservation status) is equated with nitrogen deposition exceedances measured against the Critical Deposition Values (KDW - the 'ecological risk ceilings')
The nitrogen 'settlement methodology' to arrive at estimates of nitrogen depositions is the AERIUS/OPS model.
One could easily argue that nature policy in the Netherlands is nothing but KDW/AERIUS policy.
All these terms need explanation and criticism. They will be explained in this lecture.
Prof Jaap C. Hanekamp received his degree in chemistry from Utrecht University in 1989. He received his first PhD, also in chemistry, from the same institution in 1992, and completed his postgraduate degree in chemistry at the University of California Riverside.
Subsequently, Hanekamp has served on scientific review committees tasked with checking the scientific quality of work carried out by various Dutch national public health and environmental agencies, and has also served as a scientific auditor mediating between various Dutch and European industries and Dutch government agencies on scientific and legislative issues, and has prepared reports based on his findings.
Hanekamp is associate professor at University College Middelburg, is director of HAN-Research, an independent scientific research company, and is an adjunct faculty member at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, etc.
Currently, Hanekamp spends a lot of time clarifying issues surrounding nitrogen problems in the Netherlands.
