Description

When considering economic developments in the Netherlands and abroad, people regularly talk about the need for innovation. In English-language jargon, it is called the change from information worker to innovation worker. From the information age, we are growing into the conceptual age.
There is a dichotomy for any work: the process and the content. Regarding the innovation process, we can rejoice in an abundance of management information focused on innovation strategy, mostly coming from countries like Japan and the United States. Management boards can draw on a multitude of management consultants who know how to outline future scenarios, complete with foresight studies on multi-year market developments.
In terms of content, however, things remain quiet. The technicians and scientists working on the content are mostly empty-handed. So how do they achieve that breakthrough that the management considers so much needed for the future? Who is providing the real answer and how does it come about? Practitioners use the combination of their knowledge, experience and talent. These three aspects together feed our intuition. For most engineers, creativity and intuition are the only tools to reach solutions to innovation issues. Is there a methodology for arriving at technical solutions other than intuition? The answer is YES; it is known by the acronym TRIZ
