Visit to the enclosed plant greenhouse, a pinnacle of sustainability
LKP Plants (Leo Koolhaas Planten) has built the first closed plant greenhouse in Europe on this scale. In this greenhouse, there is no longer any ventilation with the outside air, preventing much heat loss. But this does mean cooling in summer, heating in winter and thereby creating a good air composition such as humidity and CO2 for plant growth. During our visit, we are shown the following details, among others:
Cooling the air via a large padwall 25cm thick, a wall of cardboard through which water runs to lower the temperature and introduce humidity. The water recirculation system, where heated water is stored and from which heat is later recovered.
An in-house development concerns the automated container system: each tray receives the amount of water and nutrients needed. This water is also recirculated. The whole process of growing, flowering and watering is automatic.
Pest control is minimal, due to the closed nature of the greenhouse, and if pest control is needed, it is done organically.
This summer, the greenhouse will be in operation for a year and, as always with new developments, things don't always go as planned. Interesting to hear how LKP Plants managed to cope with these negative experiences, in short, development continues. The plants grown by LKP Plants are Bromeliads. These are so-called epiphytes that originally grow in the jungle. During our visit, we get to see the logistic process of potting, sorting and preparing them for transport. We also get an explanation of the technology, such as the boiler house, combined heat and power (TE), water supply and climate chamber.
