In memoriam Fokker
Description
When Fokker Aircraft went bankrupt in 1996, an approximate 100,000 years of experience entered the market. What happened to that experience? Many specialists and managers turned out well. They flew on to top positions in Dutch business. There, they spread their specific experience to a whole generation of Dutch entrepreneurs, directors and managers. The Fokker of those days is dead. But the spirit and the experience gained lives on, still influencing the management of various organisations and thinking about leadership and successful entrepreneurship.
So the then thought and expected doomsday scenario does not seem to have come true. The legacy of Fokker is a positive one.
Just as the whole of the Netherlands always feels like the best coach when 'our' Dutch national team plays football or, even worse, has played badly, everyone seems to know why Fokker went bankrupt in 1996. Why it was a shame, a disgrace or unnecessary. Why it was logical, justified or inevitable. Why it was the fault of Fokker, DASA, the government or the dollar.
Joost van de Griendt interviewed 40 former Fokker managers who talk inspiringly about what they did with their Fokker experience. Of course, they also look back at the bankruptcy, some from very close quarters, such as former CEO Ben van Schaik: 'Industrial politics was dead'.
The lecture is a mixture of inspiring stories about leadership and management, a look back at Fokker and the bankruptcy, with potentially instructive lessons, and thought-provoking statements about the value of experience and about experience management.
