On 13 February, interested parties in Locks and Maintenance met at the KIVI Maintenance Event "Visit maintenance organisation Beatrix Locks". The aim of the event was to give interested KIVI members and non-members an inside look at a DBFM contract. We were told, how client Rijkswaterstaat and contractor Sas van Vreeswijk started together and how soon the Maintenenance club (called MTC) will carry out the maintenance for more than 25 years based on predetermined performance and discounts(penalties).

First, we walked around the current lock chamber, saw the large barges mooring in the lock chamber and were shown the renovation/conversion of lock houses to new operation area. We were also allowed to tour the monumental lifting towers with motion mechanisms in two groups. The drives still look very solid. From above, we also had a nice view of the new project, the construction of the3rd lock chamber. Finally, the two speakers Pieter van der Galiën from RWS and Paul van Zanen from Sas van Vreeswijk explained the project. Interesting details and peculiarities regarding tendering for multi-year maintenance came up, as well as entertaining discussions with the participants. After the presentation, there was an opportunity to talk for a while. It was a successful interactive afternoon with nice technical weather, as can be seen in the pictures.

You can find the presentation via the link below.

Description

Visiting maintenance organisation Beatrix Locks

Also curious what is happening along the A27 near Nieuwegein? Where the felling of trees makes it visible that a new dike has been built. Where casemates have been moved by huge cranes from Mammoet. What is interesting here for us maintenance enthusiasts?
Well this is the most important link in the route from Rotterdam to Amsterdam and during construction and afterwards, the first two lock chambers have to remain "just" in use.

Construction consortium Sas van Vreeswijk has started work on the realisation of the 3rd column of the Beatrix Lock and the widening of the Lek Canal since September 2016. Under this contract from Rijkswaterstaat, the maintenance of the existing two gullies also went to the construction consortium. As Maintenance Department, we get to hear how this is done in practice. Besides getting an explanation about the maintenance, we also get to visit the lift towers of the existing monumental Beatrix Locks. These have been in operation since 1938 and still contain the largely original drive system. During the realisation phase, Sas van Vreeswijk is carrying out the maintenance of this monumental infrastructure. Following commissioning of the 3rd lock chamber and renovation of the existing locks, the 27-year operation phase will start in 2019. By means of data collection and measurement of critical parameters, the ambition is to implement predictive maintenance, so that the Beatrix lock has maximum availability and can be maintained in a predictable manner.

The Sas van Vreeswijk consortium is responsible for the design, realisation, financing and maintenance for 27 years of the Beatrix lock. For financing, Besix Group, RebelValley, TDP, Heijmans and Jan de Nul are responsible. The design and realisation will be carried out by Heijmans, Jan de Nul and Besix. Joining the 27-year maintenance period are Agidens, Martens and Van Oord.
