On Wednesday 20 May, the KIVI subject group Maintenance visited Mennens in Amsterdam. Mennens supplies various types of lifting and hoisting equipment and various types of chainwork and steel cables. They also do tests and inspections on all this lifting and hoisting equipment.

The topic of the afternoon was: Maintenance of lifting and hoisting equipment - what is allowed and what is required? The afternoon began with a brief introduction to what the law and regulations say about this and what the government expects. We were introduced to the EKH, the association for inspection companies of lifting and hoisting equipment, and the working methods they advocate in order to work safely and comply with laws and regulations.

After the presentation, there was a tour of the company. Here, we were introduced to a wide variety of steel cables, rope and chainwork. We could also see live how lifting slings are pressed from steel cables.

After the tour, there were drinks and while enjoying a snack and a drink, the afternoon concluded. All in all, it was a successful afternoon during which everyone became a little wiser about hoisting and lifting equipment and the requirements of the law to maintain it safely.
