The Department of Mechanical Engineering at The Hague University of Applied Sciences provides students with a challenging maintenance learning line. This maintenance learning line was developed about four years ago at the request of KIVI Vakgroep Maintenance. For the 3rd-year students, the course is enriched with contributions from the professional field.

Scania and Netherlands Railways recently provided lectures on maintenance outsourcing contracts. As the conclusion of the maintenance subject, students were allowed to provide pitches on Thursday 31 May on their findings on strategic maintenance for a mineral water bottling plant. Around 120 students prepared presentations in 22 groups.

The pitches were given to juries consisting of maintenance specialists from: DSM, Defence, SKF, Nutricia, Rotary Industry Group, Oxand, Shell, Maula Consultancy Services and Prysmian.

After the pitches, the specialists from the professional field asked students about their choices and decision-making. Finally, the students were given valuable tips to improve their final report.

Afterwards, the judges reviewed the pitches with the lecturers over a sandwich, offered by KIVI Maintenance. All participants were satisfied with the set-up and course of this event.

Description

Mechanical engineering students at The Hague University of Applied Sciences receive a thorough maintenance programme during their studies. In the third year, this results in knowledge of maintenance at strategic level, covering methods such as TPM, RCM and RBI. At the end of the course on maintenance at strategic level, students have to give an advice on how they want to organise maintenance for 15 years from a fictitious spring water bottling process. A reasoned choice for a maintenance method is expected, including (partly) outsourcing and annual (maintenance) costs.

On Thursday, 31 May 2018, around 20 groups of students will present their choice with a short pitch.

Wanted: Participants with (recent) maintenance experience, who will sit on a jury to assess pitches.
Purpose: To ask critical questions after the pitch and give students feedback on their advice.

Please note! This is not an official assessment but more to give additional input to the students from professional practice.

Location and time: De Haagse Hogeschool, Rotterdamseweg 137 in Delft. Thursday 31 May 2018 from 10.30 - 12.00.
Compensation: a VVV voucher and lunch.
