SECURITY FROM WITHIN

Safety has improved significantly since the beginning of the last century. However, workplace accidents and illnesses have been on the rise again since the last few years.

But despite that observation, that was not what hit me in 2013. From the start of my working life, safety was high on the agenda. However, as a result of an event in 2013 (obviously with a run-up that had started some time before), it radically changed my view on safety. A renewed approach to dealing with risk is needed.

Safety from within means safety from intrinsic motivation and with policies integrated into company policy. After my painful experiences in 2013, I started digging into the possibilities of improving safety. In 'Safety from Within', I reach out for tools to better deal with risks.

It becomes clear that safety is not a 'concern' file (rules, legislation, and if not then 'fines will follow!'), but a strength. The critical importance of Leadership is outlined. But also how we can better monitor safety performance so that it gives a meaningful indication of how we are performing rather than merely looking at the number of accidents that have occurred and how many misses are found to have occurred after conducting audits. But we should also be careful with those indicators.

They often give the wrong indication of performance! How can safe behaviour be fuelled? How important is the company culture for safety, such as psychological safety and involvement of the people actually doing the work? Where should we focus on? Where it really matters instead of shooting with hail. Achieving more with less work. And how does the role of the HSE advisor fit into this new approach?

Safety from the Inside out is not a new 'management system', but provides insights into how safety can be raised to a higher level collectively and individually, and will prove to be a 'strength' rather than a cumbersome and costly business issue.

Safety from within - Rob Kreté

Based in HTS Chemical Engineering, Rob has worked in the process industry for 35 years, as a builder and as a site manager in the US, UK, Venezuela and in the Netherlands, and as a business consultant for the past three years.

He went through a deep crisis as a site manager due to safety issues and experienced a major safety incident. This dramatically influenced his understanding and approach to security.

He talks about innovative insights that improve safety without having to involve investment, extra staff and higher costs.

'Safety from within' means safety from intrinsic motivation and policies that are integrated into company policy. He shows the importance of leadership, of psychological safety, of trust and the involvement of the people who do the actual work, those most exposed to hazards.

From 'Safety from Within', he talks about how to take collective and individual safety to a higher level and make it a 'strength' rather than remaining a concern.
