Exactly what maintenance documentation should be supplied with machinery?
This question is answered concretely and clearly in the new Maintenance Documentation Code of Practice. On 21 June 2016, this new guideline, an initiative of the Royal Institute of Engineers (KIVI), Maintenance Department, will be presented at the Maintenance Documentation Congress.
Machinery, including assemblies, must be provided with maintenance documentation according to the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. However, clear criteria are lacking in the Machinery Directive, resulting, for example, in insufficient or unclear information being provided, or only loose component documentation. This means that the user receives insufficient information for adequate maintenance, and must organise and complete this information himself.
The Maintenance Documentation Code of Practice takes as its starting point what the Machinery Directive aims at: the user must receive complete and integrated maintenance documentation from the manufacturer or assembler. The new Code of Practice fleshes this out with daily practice in mind. This creates clarity for both the manufacturer and the user.
With this Code of Practice in hand, suppliers can provide their customers with complete maintenance information, Technical Services can provide insight into the required documentation, and customers can check the maintenance information received or specify it in advance via the Code of Practice.
