22nd symposium ConcepT - Urbanisation
Description
The study association of Civil Engineering has been organising the largest symposium at the University of Twente for years. Since the last edition, the symposium focuses on all three directions of Civil Engineering; Building, Water and Traffic.
Currently, half of the world's population lives in cities. This is expected to be as much as 2/3 by 2050. More and more people are moving from rural areas to cities: the urban population is growing by 60 million every year. With this trend, there is an increasing need for housing, facilities and traffic capacity. Looking at this trend, the question arises: how can the limits to growth be pushed back and how can liveability be ensured in a sustainable way?
At the symposium 'Urbanisation, Where are the limits of the city? ' will focus on civil engineering solutions to tackle the problems of growing cities. A key challenge is dealing with limited space and resources. This will require thinking more about creative solutions. People live ever closer together, creating problems of relocation, housing supply and water abstraction. How can space be used efficiently without sacrificing quality? There is also a need to ensure a balance between demand for facilities and their limited availability. How can large traffic flows run smoothly? Perhaps ICT solutions will also contribute to a sustainable solution to these issues. The boundaries of the booth need to be pushed, literally but also certainly figuratively!
For the 22nd edition of the ConcepT symposium, the symposium committee has already determined a number of interesting speakers. For example, Nico de Vries, former chairman of BAM's executive board, will lead the day as chairman of the day. Also giving a lecture will be Marc de Vreede (BAM), Kees Peters (Movares) and Piet Dircke. A new addition to the symposium this year is the teachers' panel. The panel of lecturers will include three lecturers, each representing one of the directions of Civil Engineering. In this way, Twente's knowledge and expertise will be better highlighted during the symposium. They will also provide input to the discussions and thus contribute to their liveliness.
Also, 18 March 2015 is Engineer's Day. This year, the day of the engineer will take place at the University of Twente. Participants in this day are of course welcome to take part in the morning programme of the ConcepT symposium.
