Description
Destination innovation: a roadmap to change
The world around us is constantly changing. Twenty years ago, people could not imagine being reachable by mobile phone every moment of the day, now they cannot live without their smartphones. Innovations also take place in construction every year; 3D printing, modular construction and smart homes are just some of the recent major changes in construction. The development of these technologies is interesting to follow, however, such developments also mean that companies and project organisations may have to adapt their structure and way of doing things to these innovations. This symposium 'Destination innovation: a roadmap to change' gives substance to the question of how technological developments in construction are changing the construction process and how the construction process can best adapt to these new developments. To what extent is modular construction changing the issues of supply chain management? Do risks, and thus the role of risk management, decrease with the use of modules? Do the new innovations/construction methods, possibly due to the entry of new players, cause changing obligations and thus a change in contracts and contract management? Will 3D printing give demand-driven construction a new dimension? Or is construction actually becoming more of a product rather than a project industry due to some of these new developments? These are just some of the many questions that could lead to the main question of this symposium: 'How does the civil process manager respond to the technological innovations in construction?'
