Adjustment Wilhelminakanaal / lock III
Description
To make central Brabant more accessible by water, the Wilhelmina Canal through and west of Tilburg will be deepened and widened and a new lock will be built. The current Wilhelmina canal is quite narrow, preventing larger inland navigation vessels from reaching the businesses in Tilburg.
The existing locks II and III will be replaced by a single new lock, at lock III, with a larger fall. This will preserve the historic, existing double bayonet lock from 1921 as a monument alongside the new lock III. Lock II will be demolished
Special features of this project include the use of the largest composite lock gates in the world and the construction of an auger turbine at the new lock.
The work is being carried out by construction consortium Heijmans-Boskalis. The lock is scheduled for completion in 2015 and the entire canal in 2016.
