Civil in Development (CiO '13)
Description
The Society "Practical Study" is the study association of Civil Engineering at Delft University of Technology and was founded in 1894. It looks after the educational interests of Civil Engineering students. This is done in the form of offering both study support and study supplement activities for its 1,600 members. Monitoring the quality of education at the faculty is also one of its main tasks. All activities of the association are organised by committees, consisting of active students who find it important to develop themselves in other fields besides their studies.
Civil in Development
Civil in Development is a committee of The Society "Practical Study". This committee focuses on the social and sustainable side of Civil Engineering and aims to create social awareness among students. Furthermore, CiO would like to make students aware of the possibility of being able to do something with their studies in the field of development aid and poverty alleviation.
Theme
One day is dedicated to development aid (Building with Society) and one day to sustainability (Building with Nature).
CiO '13 does not only want to highlight development aid. In fact, the development of Civil Engineering itself is also becoming increasingly important. With regard to these developments, CiO '13 wants to explore the possibility of dealing with our world in a more sustainable way and generate discussion about it. How can Civil Engineering contribute to a sustainable future? Can Civil Engineering contribute to a sustainable future? In which areas can the Netherlands help with development? Where exactly does the Netherlands itself need help? These are some examples of questions that will pass by during the symposium. Through lectures, workshops, discussions and an info market, these questions will be raised and perhaps even answered.
Goals
In addition to the general goals that led to the creation of the CiO, we as a committee have set ourselves the goal of taking a bigger approach this year. We want to get to the level of a worthy symposium, reaching a large number of Civil Engineering students. To achieve this, the 2 afternoons are timetable-free and we are working hard on promotion and a nice site.
Dates and day structure
The symposium will take place on 20 and 21 November this year. It will take up 2 afternoons, from 12:30 to 17:00 with run-out. Due to the fact that not all students will be able to attend both days, we will try to involve and captivate everyone with a varied and independent programme.
Both days will be opened with a lunch and an info market where companies and foundations can show their projects to the students. This will give a nice idea of the opportunities available to Civil students and, combined with lunch, some chatting and contact can also be made for a possible internship.
Next, the chairman of the day will open the day after which a first lecture will be held.
To keep the interactive in it, a workshop will then follow depending on the day or a discussion will be started after a second lecture. The day will end with a lecture on drinks, during which a discussion will also follow.
