Description

Some of the primary flood defences in the Netherlands do not meet legal safety standards. The current flood defence in Katwijk is one of them. The barrier is not along the coastline, but through the village. Some 3,000 people now live outside the dike as a result. The Rijnland Water Board, Katwijk municipality, the province of South Holland and Rijkswaterstaat have chosen to reinforce Katwijk seaward. Along the Boulevard, a new route will be created. The current row of dunes will be widened and a dike will be built in the dunes. This solution offers the best possibilities for both safety and spatial quality in Katwijk. The dike in the dunes makes it possible to build an underground car park along the Boulevard. The parking garage will be at street level. The garage will be largely encased in dunes and form an integrated part of the coast and the Boulevard. The wide dunes will create more space for nature and recreation.

The excursion will consist of a tour and presentation at the information centre. Followed by a tour of the beach and ending with drinks by the sea in one of the catering establishments.
