Venice's Delta Works
Description
Venice floods with some regularity, a reason for the city government to seal off Venice's lagoon from the sea at high tide. Strukton, the Dutch construction company, is collaborating on the prestigious Venice Delta Works project.
For years, the periodic aqua alta, the high-water flood, has been an ordeal for Venice and everything in and around the lagoon. The MOSE project (named after Moses who separated the waters, but meaning Modulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico) envisages closing the lagoon's three sea openings by means of movable drums, which are raised during storm tides. The project is beginning to take shape: the beds have been dug and stabilised, the lock chambers adjacent to the flood defences have been constructed and the caissons are being sailed in

Peter van Westendorp, project manager for Strukton, talks about the construction and operation of the Venetian storm surge barrier, in particular the closure of the southern opening, between the city of Chioggia and the coastal island of Pellestrina. Last summer was a funda¬mental phase in the construction. A film was shot of the work.
