Description

We are pleased to invite you to the DIMI congress Deltas & Ports of the Future: towards new synergy of Delta Technology, Spatial Design and Governance on 28 January 2016 next at the Aula, TU Delft. This congress aims to discuss how we can develop 'smart combinations' of flood defence systems with other important societal issues.

The Netherlands have a long tradition in this respect. The Zuiderzeeworks (built after the flood in the Zuiderzee of 1916, 100 years ago) were a smart combination of a new flood defence system with extension and modernization of agriculture in the Netherlands. The Delta works, built after the storm surge of 1953, functioned as an important contribution to the policy to build an industrial economy and to distribute welfare and population more equally on the national territory.
The Room for the River project puts the emphasis on the combination of flood defence with nature development.

The current challenge is how we can combine the implementation of the Delta programme with important issues like metropolitan development, environmental improvement, energy transition and the transition to a 'Next Economy'.

The new 'smart combinations' of the 21st century ask for new concepts for design, engineering and governance.
