Diversion of South Willemsvaart:new date
Description
Please note: due to circumstances, the date has been changed from 22 May to 12 June.
East of 's-Hertogenbosch, Rijkswaterstaat is constructing a new stretch of canal nine kilometres long. It is a branch of the current Zuid-Willemsvaart that will be named Maxima Canal. The new section starts at Den Dungen and flows into the Maas at Empel. The project should be completed by the end of 2014. The aim is to make the Zuid-Willemsvaart suitable for larger class IV ships (three-layer container shipping).
Apart from the canal, 2 new locks and 8 new bridges will be constructed, including a combined railway, car and bicycle bridge. A nature-friendly bank is also planned.
At the time of the visit, construction has already progressed to the point where a good picture of the new situation can be obtained.
