On Tuesday 26 March from 13.00 - 17.00, the Dike Monitoring Network is organising a workshop on dike monitoring and AI in collaboration with Digishape. KIVI members are cordially invited to attend.

Content workshop

The Netherlands is protected by more than 3,500 kilometres of primary flood defences and 14,000 kilometres of regional inland water defences. Monitoring such a complex system is quite a task and very important to protect our country from flooding. Artificial Intelligence is playing an increasingly important role here.

During the DigiShape day, we look at the state of the art of various methods of dike monitoring and discuss a number of AI systems that have been developed together by academia and practice. We will also discuss how to bring together data from different managers (e.g. around cracks in dykes) so that together we can develop faster, better AI solutions.

Practical information

  • Tuesday 26 March from 13:00 to 17:00
  • If there are people present, who do not speak Dutch, we will hold the meeting in English.
  • TU Delft, Faculty CiTG, Stevinweg 1, 2628 CN in Delft
  • Parking: we recommend parking in P2 at Van den Broekweg 1 in Delft.
  • More information and registration via this link

Programme

Full workshop descriptions can be found on the website.

13.00 o'clock - Welcome at TU Delft

Walk-in with coffee/tea and something sweet

13.30 hrs - Introduction and perspective from the water board

Jeroen Baars of Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier takes us through the perspective of the water board. In what way can Artifical Intelligence offer solutions within dike management?

14.00:00 - Digitwin and proven dike strength

Kin Sun Lam from Deltares will show that in a DigiTwin for flood defences, subsurface, dike monitoring and AI/data science come together. He will illustrate this using a pilot at Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier.

14.30 hours - Training AI models

Muriel Serrurier Schepper of the AI Annotation Lab will talk about training AI models. The AI Annotation Lab is a social enterprise offering high-quality, responsible data annotation at a central location in the Netherlands.

14.45 hours - Break

15.00 hrs - AI Toolbox for inspection monitoring of flood defences

Joost Stenfert discusses the AI Toolbox for inspection monitoring of flood defences, which is under development at HKV line in water. He will show examples and ambitions and discuss with participants the ideas of the Toolbox and possible further developments.

15.30 am - The role of sensors in AI systems for dike monitoring

Juan Pablo Aguilar Lopez from TU Delft will discuss the role of sensors in AI systems for dike monitoring. Machine Learning algorithms, developed from historical data, combined with smart and advanced sensors form the core of an AI system. Juan will demonstrate this through a number of current projects carried out by him and his students.

16.00:00 - Discussion

We will discuss with participants how to build on what is already available. A lot of data has been collected in the sector, how can we set up sharing? How can we accelerate the potential of data science innovations in dike monitoring with the available data?

17.00:00 - End

It promises to be an inspiring afternoon! More information and registration via this link.
