Webinar: Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier: assessing the largest Delta work

Wednesday 15 March 2023 ( Engineer's Day) from 12:00 - 13:00

How do you assess the safety of the largest Delta work in the Netherlands? That is the question that Rijkswaterstaat, TNO, HKV and IV-Infra have jointly taken up.

During 2019-2022, the safety assessment of the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier was carried out by Rijkswaterstaat, TNO, HKV and IV-Infra. The Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier is a unique object, comprising, among others, 62 movable slides, 65 concrete piers, an extensive bottom protection, two islands, break stone dams and the Roompot lock. The 'Regulation on safety of primary flood defences' requires a customised test for the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier, which includes not only a structural failure probability at section level, but also the influence of this failure probability on the water level statistics in the hinterland.

To enable this, tailor-made models have been developed that use a fully probabilistic calculation to calculate both the structural failure probability and the influence on the water level statistics. In this Webinar, we will tell you about the methodology applied, learning points and results of the assessment, as an example of a method by which the strength of our engineering structures and their connection with the underlying water system can be assessed without failure probability calculations and in an integrated way.

Curious about all aspects of this assessment? Then sign up for this webinar, organised by KIVI Construction and Hydraulic Engineering Department. Participation is free of charge.
